Belt Lipectomy

Project decription

Overview

A belt lipectomy, also known as a lower body lift, is a surgical procedure that removes excess sagging fat and skin from the abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. This may result from aging, genetic predisposition or after significant weight loss. Dr. Ziakas specializes in post bariatric body contouring and has developed close collaboration with renowned bariatric surgeons in the Houston metropolitan area and its suburbs. The treatment that best fits your needs and expectations can be further discussed with your surgeon during your consultation.

Benefits

  • Improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue that supports fat and skin
  • Reshapes the targeted area(s) where the fat and skin are removed
  • May improve a dimpled, irregular skin surface

Candidates

Patients considering belt lipectomy should be in good health and have realistic expectations. Patients who smoke, have high blood pressure that is not under control, have blood disorders or take blood thinners, such as Aspirin, Coumadin or Plavix, may experience higher risk of healing problems.

Recovery

Most patients tolerate the procedure well and are able to go home the same or next day depending on whether the procedure was combined or not. Medications for pain and nausea to be taken by mouth are routinely prescribed with an occasional short course of antibiotics. Some bruising and swelling are expected but improve over several days. Using extra pillows while you sleep will help reduce swelling. Strenuous exercises and lifting heavy objects should be avoided for few weeks. An abdominal binder and a pressure garment (if liposuction was performed) will have to be used for several weeks after surgery to help with healing and decrease swelling.

All patients considering elective surgery should abstain from smoking, including secondhand smoke and avoid any nicotine containing products, both before and after surgery. Dr. Ziakas strongly advises all his patients to quit smoking for good. The sutures used in belt lipectomy are absorbable and dissolve over time. Drains, if used at the time of surgery, are removed in the office during your follow up appointment. All patients are advised to use a good quality sunscreen when outdoors (minimum SPF 30) to minimize the hazardous effects of sun radiation on the incisions and the rest of the skin. The majority of patients are able to return to their routine activities in about a month.
