Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the look of facial skin by softening the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance. The treatment that best fits your needs and expectations can be further discussed with your surgeon during your consultation.
- Smooths fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth
- Improves the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery
- Improves acne scars
- Improves brown spots
- Improves sun damaged skin
All patients who wish to improve facial skin may consider treatment. Patients who smoke, have high blood pressure that is not under control, have blood disorders or take blood thinners such as Aspirin, Coumadin or Plavix, may experience higher risk of healing problems.
Most patients tolerate the procedure well and are able to go home the same day. Over the counter Tylenol or Motrin suffice for postoperative pain control. Some bruising and swelling are expected but improve over several days. Medication that helps healing is applied topically for 3 weeks.
All patients considering elective surgery should abstain from smoking, including secondhand smoke and avoid any nicotine containing products, both before and after surgery. Dr. Ziakas strongly advises all his patients to quit smoking for good. All patients are advised to use a good quality sunscreen when outdoors (minimum SPF 30) to minimize the hazardous effects of sun radiation on the skin. The majority of patients are able to return to their routine activities in about a month.
